Here are two new release dates you can really sink your teeth into:
Fox Home Entertainment plans to unleash "28 Weeks Later" on Oct. 9. The feverish sequel to director Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later"
was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo ("Intacto"). The disc goes for $30. Fox is also packaging both zombie films as a two-pack that streets the same day for $35. "28 Weeks Later" extras include 13 minutes of unseen footage, a commentary from Fresnadillo and a flash animation version of the graphic novel "The Aftermath"
that bridges events in the two films. You don't have to be a horror fan to appreciate these smart, socially aware films about flesh-eating ghouls, but it helps. Sorry, no sign yet of Boyle's extended cut of "28 Days."
On Oct. 16, Warner Bros. revives its history-making 1927 talkie with a three-disc version of Al Jolson in "The Jazz Singer." Warner Home Video says the film is "immaculately restored and remastered from earliest surviving nitrate film elements and original Vitaphone sound-on-disc recordings." The swarm of extras includes almost four hours of Vitaphone shorts, a 1947 radio show adaptation featuring Jolson and a commentary from film historians Ron Hutchinson and Vince Giordano. The tentpole extra is "The Dawn of Sound," a 93-minute docu commissioned for this DVD release. The "Jazz Singer" set goes for $40 max.
